The Cave

 Design intentions:

Premise:

  • The Cave is a small exploration level where I designed a more natural and organic environment compared to my previous personal projects. The objective is to navigate an underground cave, resulting in a straightforward design characterized by refined simplicity.

  • The level features environmental puzzles offering light traversal challenges. The player can jump, crouch, and interact with buttons, as well as collect crystals and encounter light platforming challenges. The level incorporates verticality and a central set-piece asset.

Motivation:

  • The intention was to create a light and atmospheric experience that could serve as an introduction, midpoint, or conclusion within a larger level.

Method:

  • The cave was constructed primarily using grouped subtractive brushes to allow for modularity and efficiency in the level-building process—akin to a kit. These brush groups can be customized by offsetting vertices differently, adding a layer of personality to the space. Varying cap shapes contribute to a more dynamic navigation flow.
